Lalkaar 2013
June 19, 2013 · 5:00 pm
UC Davis
While the young children play outside after their Punjabi school classes and parents congregate in langar halls, too many young Sikhs decide to stay at home, or pursue other activities, rather than go the Gurdwara.
However, this doesn’t mean their spiritual thirst has been quenched. It’s time for a change. It’s to time stop blaming others. It’s time for the next generation of Sikhs, our generation of Sikhs, to empower themselves and begin engaging with the local Gurdwaras. It’s time to turn the ‘they” and ‘them’ into ‘we’ and ‘us’. The Gurdwara is OUR institution; it has been, and always will be, the center of Sikh life and community. It’s OUR grassroots democracy but only if we choose to make it so.This year at Lalkaar 2013, we will re-create, re-engage, re-emerge with the ‘door to our Guru’. Join us and be part of the movement as we re-kindle our center, grow with our Gurdwara, and connect with community.
In addition to the educational opportunities afforded by the conference, Lalkaar provides great networking opportunities for young Sikhs, allowing them to forge durable bonds with the community. Lalkaar has provided a forum to discuss such issues for over a decade now, and hopes to have you participating and contributing to this year’s conference! Aimed at young Sikhs, ages 18-25, the conference will begin on Thursday, June 20, 2013 and will run through Sunday, June 23, 2013. Participants engage in the conference curriculum during the mornings and afternoons, leaving such activities as picnics, ice cream socials, performances, and a formal banquet for the evenings.
